Akai Sushi's Reviews and comments
My friend and I went out for dinner here. It was easy to get a table and the staff were quick and helpful. They had solid vegetarian options and decent prices. I generally liked the food and would recommend. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is quite nice too.
It was my first experience with sushi. The staff is very helpful and recommended great sushi for beginners. I had miso soup, spicy salmon sushi and Golden dragon rolls.
Been going here for years. Awesome Sushi.
Best sushi in the area. I think the prices are fair for such great food. Also, they were very nice.
Very fresh sushi and sashimi. Super clean premises and friendly service.
I was positively surprised with quality of food. Be back avain :)
Sushi was great! Got the love boat set which came with about 44 pieces. Was super full sharing for 2 people. Price is reasonable given the quality of sushi compare to many sushi places I have been in TO. Paid 54 plus tax and tip. Definitely recommend :)
Decent sushi boat with fresh seafood, the quantity isn't too overwhelming - for a large boat to share with 4 people, and for the price, it could definitely be a bit bigger in portion.
Otherwise, decent sushi and fairly easy to get to. The service from the restaurant was excellent.
Note: The washroom downstairs is super stuffy and smelly, highly suggest not going downstairs prior to eating...🤮
Great quality, great pricing, fantastic service by all
Fresh sashimi. Will be my go to now!
Food is amazing here. High quality!
Rolls and udon yum yum
One my favourite sushi restaurants in the city. The rice has that perfect acidic/sweet balance and the fish is so fresh!
To celebrate my girlfriend's birthday, we ordered sushi, sashimi and roll combos. When they found out about the occasion, they went way above and beyond to pack extras. We would've been totally happy with the taste and quality of the original order and the mention of this story is to share with others the excellent customer service from the restaurant. This has become one of the few pinned places on my Google Maps in terms of top restaurants in downtown Toronto.
Surprise find, this place provided better sushi than a lot of more expensive places. Affordable but filling, I will definiately visit again.
Such delicious high quality sushi and their miso soup is just AMAZING! They also decorate each platter so beautifully, it's basically art! We highly recommend!
Great sushi! Awesome service and super affordable.
I came here on a Monday night for a birthday celebration and the staff were attentive, cordial and kind.
Great location near Harbord and Major Street and I'd recommend it for a sit down dinner or a drop by lunch.
Fish is super fresh and chefs are very skilled.
Great service, fresh food and great tasting food. This is the goto restaurant if you are looking for quality sushi and sashimi!
Service is very good. Quality of their fish is excellent. Highly recommended!
Went here for lunch during a workday and was pleasantly surprised. The food was reasonably priced and better than the other similar restaurants on Bloor. The only downside here is that service can be slow when they are busy, as they only seem to have one waitress serving all of the ten or so tables.
Edit: I have made multiple visits since my first review and the quality is still great. I tend to get takeout more often now as it saves me time.
I will definitely be coming here again!
Staff is beautiful and friendly. Yummy Unagi!
The sushi here is fresh, large and delicious. Presentation, decor, service, ambiance ... all top notch. Highly recommend.
Super lobster is pretty cool :))
Came here twice so far, food is a bit pricey but quality and quantity is pretty good.
Here’s what I ordered
Sushi Dinner ~$27 and Beef Dinner (Some fancy name, I don’t remember) ~$23/$24.
👍
Various lunch combos available
Quick service

A bit dark inside
Super adorable and great service! This place will do gluten free - thank goodness! Loved the atmosphere.
Sushi is super inconsistent, I wish their prices changed as much as their sushi appearance
Beautiful restaurant that I'm looking forward to dining in. Our take-out food was delicious!
Good quality sushi with decent prices. Not the cheapest joint in the area, but it offers better quality dishes than the other casual sushi restaurants in the Annex and Harbord Village. I particularly liked the spiciness of the spicy salmon roll and the amount of rice used in the nigiri.
Great place for sushi close to UofT.
The sushi isn't cheap, but the price is reasonable and definitely worth the it based on the quality and taste. We've been there a few times and everytime the fish is fresh and tasty. The proportion of fish to drive is also great.
The staff were really nice when we went, and the atmosphere was really great as well. They play a variety of relaxing jpop and Anime music.
A nice authentic family run sushi spot.
Sushi always seems to be better quality than other local shops
Always amazing quality sushi, with friendly service!
Really good sushi. Fresh and amazing
Lovely, quite and cozy Japanese restaurant in Harbord village with friendly staff and good selection of sushi. We got their "boat" and they let us substitute the ones we didn't want with salmon sushi and sashimi. Great miso soup!
Excellent Sushi lunch, I’ll be back.
Always good quality sushi and friendly staff. Under lockdown, we call with an order and it usually takes 20 to 30 minutes for it to be ready for pick up. Love it!
This place is really really good, I ate half of the sushi in the pic but I hope you get the point
Great sushi! Will go back.
Absolutely amazing and large sushi! So many tasty options on the menu!
Great fish and service!
Decently priced sushi although I have felt sick a couple of times after
Excellent food - made with care - and top Quality ingredients separate this sushi restaurant from all the rest next.
One of the best sushi places in Toronto, we go here regularly and are never disappointed
Impressive quality sushi, good menu of well prepared dishes.
Loved it here, great service and beautiful atmosphere. They gave us a little tea candle and it smelled amazing. Presentation of the food was incredible. Enough about the aesthetics. Food wise, it was very good, good portions. Food alone would be a 3.5 but I feel that the presentation and atmopshere and service pushed the score so much higher.
Such an amazing lunch at Akai sushi! Will definitely visit here again!
Love boat was fabulous as well as golden bridge roll...yum
Second time ordering from here and had to write a review. This has got to be some of the freshest sushi and sashimi I have had in Toronto. Love this place.
Quiet little sushi place. The quality is great, staff was really nice. I'm not a huge fan of avocado but they were very considerate in changing the combo to suit my needs. The room is decorated beautifully, and the washrooms are super super clean.
This is a great mid range sushi restaurant. You'll be hard to pressed to find a better restaurant for the price. I've always enjoyed myself here. Dinner for two get the boat!
They have their own sushi rolls, which tasted good unlike some restaurant's mishmash. The vibe is also a bonus. Reasonable price.
Went here for the first time this evening. Great place. Great staff. Great food. See you again soon. Five stars!
sushi was phenomenal. service was very friendly, a bit slow since we were dealing with a newbie but she was very nice. would definitely go back if I were in the part of town again. I would definitely recommend if you're into sushi
I visited here on a Friday with a date, and was very impressed with the atmosphere, service, and quality of food.
We arrived at 7:30 pm (having booked a reservation the day before) and the place was packed, with no spare seating available save for reserved spots. So be sure to reserve if you're coming over the end of the week/weekend!
The restaurant was well lit, though not bright, and so set a great mood for the evening. Though filled to capacity it was easy to speak across the table, and the small candle on our table was a nice touch.
The server was prompt and always around when we needed her but was never overbearing. We were largely left to ourselves save for when food, tea, or the bill were being delivered. Which was exactly as we wanted it. She was helpful whenever we asked her a question.
The quality of food was very good. We ordered the small sashimi boat (25 pieces) and a pair of rolls; one spicy, the other with large amounts of guacamole. Everything we had was very good and was ample for the two of us. Our experience would have been slightly improved if the server had actually told us what the different kinds of fish were included in the boat. While we could identify most of the fish there were two that, while good, weren't immediately identifiable to either of us.
On the whole I enjoyed my visit here and hope/expect to return again. It's a great, quiet, place to come on a Friday or Saturday night and I'd highly recommend you check it out.
We got here for a late late lunch. Lovely decoration! The server was supportive, recommended many options while we were confusing though they didn’t work for us. The things I don’t quite like about the restaurant is that they don’t serve sushi and sashimi tray for lunch. And the light on our table were so weak that I couldn’t snap any good pictures. But the food was so so delicious, super fresh, totally worth the price.
The wait was a little on the long side and the prices were a premium, but the sushi and service were absolutely worth it. The staff are very attentive and quick to help.
One small tip: including a few packets of soy sauce in our takeout box would've made the experience even better.
Excellent sushi. Small space, really intimate. Salads are really good too. Our fave is the avacado salad, dynamite, spicy Salmon. Our son loves the miso soup.
My friend and I shared the small sushi tray and it was delicious! Very reasonable price for the quality/taste.
Service is also very good.
My wife and I stopped in for lunch. Calm atmosphere. Friendly staff. Loved the sushi - even bringing some for home.
Great place for sushi. It is not all you can eat. Its standard prices for sushi. I got a love boat with my friend which I highly recommend for people looking for a variety of food for 2. It came with a small soup and salad to start then a giant boat with tons of sushi and sashimi (variety of just raw fish).
Amazing sushi! They add their own unique spin to each roll. High quality and very tasty. Great presentation. I got their party platters for an event. Sadly they don't typically deliver (only through a Door Dash defined radius), but I wanted to have Akai Sushi for my party and they went above and beyond and personally delivered to my place. Love them!
Been once so far, the beef teriyaki was excellent, veggies cooked nicely as well as the beef and the sauce was just right. Small and cozy place. Staff were friendly.
The place is right on the corner of the street.
Finding parking in the area is a bit challenging to say the least depending on the time of day you go.
I’ve been here twice now at very different times of day (late lunch and late late dinner). Both times, we were treated to excellent sushi and rolls. The fish tastes exceptionally fresh, and the service is friendly. I almost hesitate to write a good review for fear that my favorite sushi spot will get crowded...
Wow! One of my favourite sushi places in the area. Honest place with very intimate and authentic atmosphere that doesn't try to be pretentious. Great quality sushi at reasonable prices.
Tastiest sushi I've had in a while. Their special sushis taste amazing all the while being fresh in flavor. Creative blends of seasonings along with fresh fruit makes it a very satisfying combination.
Best sushi in this neighborhood, which in fact is the sushi neighborhood. Delicious and fresh every single time
Really enjoy Akai.
Very cozy inside, lots of dark wood. Service is friendly, food is very good. It's a good mid-range, regular type sushi place.
They have a few of their own inventive rolls. We love their miso soup, the Korean chap-chae (yummy noodles with veggies), really amazing with the deep fryer - light and not greasy.
Very good sushi. Would recommend highly
Recently moved to Harbord Village and this place is a gem. They defo have the best deal for two anywhere around in terms of amount and quality; we got a takeaway order for 27.99 which had 3 kinds of spicy rolls and they were ALL super tasty. Have tried a couple of other sushi places around here (largely because these guys aren't on Uber/don't deliver) but these guys are definitely worth the short walk from where we are. Also a super cute vibe inside – would love to have a sit-down meal here. Overall really quick service too (and friendly!). We were in and out in what felt like ten minutes from ordering and paying!
Cute restaurant. I really liked the beef bowl.
Really nice, fresh sushi.
Well priced and very fresh. Great service and cozy relaxed atmosphere. Revolving door of customers so popular but it was extreme that it got uncomfortable. Not noisy which wasnt nice so you can have a conversation without yelling.
I've always been happy with my food from here, I almost aleays get take out. It's a small place. I love their agedashi tofu and the sushi is always yummy.
This place is a like a little hidden gem of a sushi restaurant in Harbord Village. The service is a little slow, but the food is solid! Both dine-in and take-out experiences are good!
Decent sushi with good service. The issue I have with this restaurant is the cleanliness.
Maybe it's just because I live in the East side, but I find sushi this good rare in Toronto. Their chirashi seemed to be only the good stuff.
Hidden gem! Great quality food and most enthusiastic and friendly service. Favourite cozy spot
First time I had sushimi. It was very good. The platter was an excellent lunch. The staff was friendly and attentive. All around good experience. Don't let the outside looks deterr you from eating here.
Place was very dark when I visited. The silence in the place, plus their music just almost took my energy away. There is also a weird smell that I think coming from the old woods of the building. They should consider some renovation. Food was average compare to the price, and the washroom in the basement is not that good.
My favourite sushi place! If you like To-Ne, you will love Akai! This is my favourite sushi place and has good quality sushi - so if you want cheap and regular rolls like most of the sushi places on bloor, this is not for you! But if you want great quality sushi that tastes even better than it looks (always such nice presentation!!) then this is your sushi place! I was skeptical about writing a review because I did not want people to bombard my fave place, but I think they should be known that management has changed since last year and it's such a great place! :)
We tried the love boat. It looks pretty and tastes good. The only thing is that we found fish scale in the sushi.
Yum Yum and Yummy again. Am a food addict and this is a place I go to often.
Best sushi place in the area! Always fresh and delicious!
A nice alternative from the sushi chop shops on Bloor. Although pricing is a slightly higher than the cheap joints on Bloor, it's well worth it. Quality of fish and dishes are all great. Interior is cozy and intimate. Facilities are clean!
It's a good place the Japan food, but it doesn't have many tables. You can't spend many time over there.
Man this place is really good! The ratio of fish to rice is just perfect (very little rice) and the fish is extremely fresh. Spicy gyoza were lovely starter, altough the edamame could have been a bit more cooked, it was still great experience and very affordable for the quantity & quality - highly recommended!
Excellent food, service, atmosphere
The restaurant was not that busy but still it took forever to get our dishes. I believe we waited for 45 min until we got our first appetizer. Also, what’s all that about with the salmon sashimi had bones in it? The sushi boat presented well tho.
Amazing sushi!
Initially the menu looked a little pricey but after receiving our food we saw the price was well justified. I highly recommend the premium sashimi dinner and spicy seafood udon. The sashimi pieces are very generous. The yellow tail and shrimp were standouts for me. The udon bowl is massive and it includes two large prawns and an array of seafood. The broth itself is very umami and tasty.
Incredible food and service! Easily the best unagi I have tasted.
Although the restaurant is small, the service and the sushis were great! We ordered 40 sushis for 50$! And it was delicious!
Great sushi! Fresh and quick service
It's interesting how they present the sushi in a woorden boat.
Cozy place with great flavourful food.
great sushi....a bit rustic...in a cosy way
Cozy atmosphere and amazing food. Best place for a nice quiet dinner on a cold evening.
I went here yesterday for the first time and l loved it. Really good sushi and great atmosphere!
Large portions and made fresh. A decent sushi place for the area and for lunch.
